The Merrimac Fire Department is in the process of receiving new equipment it has purchased through grants awarded by the state.
The Department was awarded $10,781.87 as part of the FY25 Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant. The Department has received many such awards at it aggressively pursues outside funding sources to mitigate the cost to Merrimac taxpayers.
The Department has purchased a combustible gas detector/4-gas meter, a handheld device designed to detect multiple gas concentrations simultaneously; a handheld thermal imager; and ropes and related hardware. The Department is awaiting delivery of ballistic vests.
Gov. Maura Healey said recently: “Massachusetts firefighters do much more than fight fires — they’re our first line of defense in any emergency. These grants will help firefighters protect themselves from injury and illness, rescue people in danger, and keep our most vulnerable residents safe from fires and other hazards at home.”
Chief Larry Fisher wishes to thank Gov. Healey and her administration, as well as Fire Marshal Jon Davine, for their support.
“The need for ballistic vests shows the challenges that firefighters may face today due to changes in modern society,” Chief Fisher said. “We are grateful that Gov. Healey and Fire Marshal Davine recognize this and ensure we have the latest equipment. The allows us to serve our community and without additionally burdening our taxpayers.”
