Merrimac Fire Extinguishes Early Morning House Fire

Chief Larry Fisher reports that the Merrimac Fire Department extinguished an early morning house fire on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, June 27, at 12:04 a.m., Merrimac Firefighters responded to reports of a fire in the ceiling of a home at 32 Locust St.

When firefighters arrived they saw smoke coming from a single family cape-style home. All occupants were out of the house at the time of firefighters’ arrival.

Due to the quick work of first responding firefighters, the fire was contained to the room of origin and was quickly extinguished. Firefighters remained on scene conducting overhaul and checking for hotspots.

One firefighter was transported to a local hospital to be treated for symptoms of dehydration. There were no other injuries reported.

The room of origin, a bedroom, sustained significant smoke and water damage.

Three family members and a few pets are displaced as a result of the fire and are being assisted by friends and family.

“By closing the doors to other rooms in the home, firefighters were able to contain the fire to the room of origin,” said Chief Fisher. “We encourage residents to close doors in their homes, which reduces the possibility of fire spreading.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Merrimac Fire Department.
