MERRIMAC — Chief Larry S. Fisher is excited to invite the community to a free open house at the Merrimac Fire Department in recognition of Fire Prevention Week.

WHAT:
Fire Prevention Week, recognized Oct. 9-15 this year, is organized by the National Fire Protection Association with the goal of educating the public about simple but important ways they can keep themselves and those they live with safe. This year’s theme is “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.”
Visitors of all ages will have the opportunity to watch firefighters use extrication tools, go through the S.A.F.E. House, use a fire hose, touch-a-truck, tour the station, and learn CPR and first aid.
Visitors also will have a chance to interact with members of the Merrimac Fire and Police Departments.
The event also will include a car seat check for parents to ensure their children’s car seats are properly installed. Food, refreshments and music will be provided.
As a part of the event, the Fire Department is raising money for cancer research in honor of local child Charlie James who is fighting Leukemia. Attendees will have the chance to buy apparel featuring the hashtag #CharlieRocks. All profits will be donated to the Jimmy Fund. Those who wish to buy apparel in advance of the event can do so here.
“This Open House is a great way for the community to connect with their local public safety officials and learn important fire safety tips and tactics,” Chief Fisher said. “We also are excited to be raising money for the Jimmy Fund, a cause very close to our hearts, in the name of one of our very own residents battling cancer. We encourage community members to join us for this fun and educational event.”
