Merrimac Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan Public Listening Session: Tuesday, August 10th at 11am

Event Date: Tuesday, August 10, 2021 – 11:00am to 12:00pm

The Town of Merrimac invites the public to participate in a listening session about the Town’s efforts with respect to Hazard Mitigation Planning, which will take place on Tuesday, August 10th at 11:00 am.

Background: Disasters can cause loss of life, damage buildings and infrastructure, and lead to devastating consequences for a community’s economic, social and environmental well-being. Hazard mitigation reduces loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters. Having a hazard mitigation plan increases awareness of hazards, risks and vulnerabilities; identifies actions for risk reduction; and focuses local resources on the greatest risks while communicating priorities to state and federal officials.

Mitigation is an investment in Merrimac’s future safety and sustainability. Mitigation planning helps the Town to act, before a disaster, to reduce losses when a disaster occurs. The planning process helps the community think through how to plan, design and develop while building partnerships for risk reduction. Mitigation plans are also a prerequisite for certain kinds of non-emergency disaster assistance including those funded by the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities program (BRIC).

Merrimac engaged local and regional stakeholders to assist in plan development and worked with the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission to draft the plan.

The public is invited to participate in this listening session to learn more about the findings from the planning process and to provide input on the draft. In order to attend the meeting, you must pre-register by sending an e-mail to Alyssa Sexton at asexton@townofmerrimac.com. You will be sent a confirmation email with a link to a Zoom meeting, which will be accessible on August 10th at 11 am. We look forward to your participation.
