Chief Larry Fisher announces the retirement of a 25-year member of the department.
Capt. Harry Ellis will retire on Thursday, Jan. 30. He will be awarded a plaque for his service that day during a luncheon at the department.
Capt. Ellis was recently promoted after serving as lieutenant for the last 18 years. He played a vital role as the Fire Department grew its ambulatory service. From 2001 to 2017, the number of calls for service in town went from 635 to 1081 a year. During that period, the number of ambulance calls increased from 200 to 690 a year.
“With his assistance, the Merrimac Fire Department has been able to provide a higher level of care to our residents and the communities around us,” Chief Fisher said. “We thank him for all he’s done for both the department and the community, and wish him luck in his future endeavors.”
Capt. Ellis joined the department in 1995 as a firefighter. He became an EMT in 1998 and a paramedic in 2001.
