MERRIMAC — Chief Larry Fisher reports that the Merrimac Fire Department responded to a brush fire Thursday afternoon.
On Thursday, March 13, at approximately 1:51 p.m., Merrimac Fire responded to Jay McLaren Memorial Trail for reports of a brush fire.
Upon arrival, crews observed a small section of the trail engulfed in flames and immediately worked to extinguish the fire. Firefighters used approximately 1,300 gallons of water.
The cause of the fire was the improper disposal of ashes.
Merrimac Fire Department reminds residents that while open burning is allowed, the state is still at a significant drought risk, with some parts of Massachusetts reaching critical conditions. Residents who are burning should exercise caution.
The department would like to share the following tips from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services about safe burning practices:
- Keep fire extinguishing materials on hand
- Burning must be done at least 75 feet from all dwellings.
- Use practical judgement
- If wind or weather appears to change, extinguish the fire immediately.
- Acceptable items to burn are brush, cane, driftwood, and forestry debris.
- If the fire gets out of control, call 911.
